(1 / x) + (3 / 8) = 1 / 2
 
 
We have a rational equation with different denominators.  We must find the LCD of the equation.  LCD is 8x.
 
(8 + 3x) / 8x = 4x / 8x
 
 
Equate numerators.
 
8 + 3x = 4x
 
 
Subtract 3x on both sides of equation.
 
8 = x

To Kelly:  Michael J. has given a very good answer.  Now, once you determine that your answer is x=8, then check that the original equation is satisfied by that answer (if not, there is some error to find).
 
So, is    1/8 + 3/8 = 1/2   ?
              4/8 = 1/2   ?   yes.
 
Checking is usually pretty easy, it builds your confidence, it finds some of your mistakes, and it helps you to understand the original problem better (seeing the answer does that -- this is true of jokes, riddles, and math).
