Exact value Precalc review

Give the EXACT value of the following.

a)sin 135
b)cos 240
c)tan 330

i missed this unit seems easy though. I would assume you just type that into a calculator? But that seems too simple .

much appreciated!

Michael J. may I add?
Calculators do not provide EXACT values. Only the formulas do.

I am aware of that.  That is why I showed the formula because they give exact values.  The student believes that calculators give exact values, when they do not.  The only give estimates or round-offs.  If you have a different solution that you would like to share, feel free to do so.

There are two ways to find tangent.

1) Use the addition/subtraction angle identity for tangent specifically.
2) Use the addition/subtraction angle identity for sine and cosine.  Then divide sine by cosine because the ratio of sine to cosine gives you tangent.

If you don't remember the identity of tangent off the top of your head, but you do know it for the sine and cosine, I would recommend using option 2.

Getting you that job or raise by augmenting your skillset

Notice I didn't use any identities for b) and c) .  They aren't necessary and they only make simple problems complex.

I'll make a) sin 135  longer than I made parts (b) and (c) because I want to explain my thought processes more thoroughly:
135 makes a 45-45-90 (1:1:√2 ratios) triangle in Quadrant II.  The vertical side of the triangle is above the x axis, so O (opposite side) is positive.  The horizontal side of the triangle is to the left of the y axis, so A (adjacent side) is negative.  H (hypotenuse) is always positive.

sin 135 = O/H = 1/√2 = √2 /2

*note: no identities were harmed in the solving of this problem.  All three parts of the problem can be answered
easily in your head if you come to understand what I've explained.  Too bad we can't upload images.  It
would be SO much easier to scan what I write on paper AND all our solutions would likely make more sense
to students.  I've seen so many misunderstandings because of the difficulty in communicating problems and
solutions using what's available to us.  There's a trig problem nobody will touch that involves a lighthouse
and cogs and chariot wheels (you think you're confused now...go find the problem and read it).  A diagram
would be a tremendous help if only the student could scan it and upload it.  I can usually decipher the intent
of a student, but even after leaving and revisiting that problem several times I still can't figure out what's
           being asked.
