Three fifths of people who pledge to purchase tickets actually do so and go to the show. An additional 70 people who had not pledged purchase tickets and go to the show. If a total of 250 people go to the show, how many people pledged to see it?

Let x = the number of people who pledged

then 3/5x = number of people who bought tickets

 

then 3/5x + 70 = 250

3/5x = 250 - 70

3/5x = 180; multiply both sides by 5, then we get 3x = 900

divide both sides by 3

x = 300

 

Proof: 3/5 times 300 = 180; 180 + 70 = 250
