Let X be the number of games I start with. If Jeff gives me 8 we'll have the same number, so Jeff must start with 16 more than me. So Jeff starts with X + 16. If I give Jeff 8 of my games then he will have twice as many as me so
(X + 16) + 8 = 2*(X - 8)
X + 24 = 2*X - 16
X = 40
So I started with 40 games and Jeff started with 56.
Check: If I give Jeff 8 then I will have 32 and he will have 64, 64 = 2*32
If Jeff gives me 8 then I will have 48 and Jeff will have 48
