As I read it, the equation is: 5x = 4 - 3x
You want to get all the x's together on one side, by themselves.
So the easiest thing to do is add 3x to both sides. That will get rid of the -3x on the right:
5x = 4 - 3x
5x + 3x = 4 - 3x + 3x
8x = 4
Now divide both sides by 8, so that you get only x on the left:
8x/8 = 4/8
x = 4/8
x = 1/2
