Hey, Gerald.  What are the factors of 12?  1,2,3,4,6,12.  What are the factors of 4?  1,2,4.  Which one is the greatest?  4.  Are there any common letters(variables)?  No.  The answer is 4.

When factored out, it could look like this: 4(3x) + 4(y) or 4(3x + y).
