Hello!
So, let's break this down:
1/4 pounds of carrots per cup of soup. We have 1.5 pounds of carrots here.
1/4=0.25
1.50-0.25=1.25 that's 3 cups
1.25-0.25=1.00 that's 6 cups
1.00-0.25=0.75 that's 9 cups
0.75-0.25=0.50 that's 12 cups
0.50-0.25=0.25 that's 15 cups
0.25-0.25=0 which brings us the answer of 18 cups!
Another (and overall, quicker) way to solve this equation is to use division!
We know 1 1/2 = 1.50 and 1/4=0.25. If we do 1.5 divided by 0.25, we get 6 portions of carrots. If every 3 cups requires 0.25 pounds of carrots, we would multiply 6*3, which gives us 18 cups!
