I think this is algebra...?

Alyssa is 12 years younger than Michelle. Michelle is 7 years older than twice Amanda's age The sum of all three ages is 47. How old is Michelle?

Please help me

Let x = Amanda's age, then Michelle's age = 2x + 7 and Alyssa's age = 2x +7 - 12. x + (2x + 7) + (2x + 7 - 12) = 47 Hope this helps.

This was really helpful! But why do we subtract 2 in step two?

I'm glad to hear Lily! The equation is: 5x+2=47 To isolate x, we want to get rid of the constant +2 on the left side. We do that by subtracting 2 from both sides: 5x+2−2=47−2 ⇢ 5x=45 This step keeps the equation balanced — what we do to one side, we must do to the other. Feel free to reach out to set up a session!
