The additive identity is zero. When the additive identity is added to any number the result is the original number.
a + 0 = a illustrates this property, where of course the "0" is the additive identity.
In the given problem, the original number is (5 + 3). When 0 is added to that number the result is the same number.
One way to answer the question:
Adding zero to a number does not affect its value.
Note that "1" is the multiplicative identity.
a (1) = a
Multiplying a number by 1 does not affect its value.
