Mathematical problem solving

Problem:

Consider the function f(x)=x+12x−6.

Questions:

  1. Determine the domain of the function. For what values of x is the function defined? Explain your reasoning.
  2. Find the x-intercept(s) and y-intercept of the function, if they exist. Show your calculations.
  3. Determine the equation(s) of any vertical asymptotes of the function. Explain why these asymptotes occur.
  4. Determine the equation of any horizontal asymptote of the function. Show the steps you took to find it.
  5. Sketch the graph of the function, labeling all intercepts and asymptotes. You don't need to plot many points, but the general shape and key features should be clear.
