I have worked in an environment where there was competition between managers, to the point where people let it interfere with the functioning of the department. There are a couple of strategies that help you navigate through this.
- Stay close to your manager. They are the one you want to impress, they are the one you are trying to convince that you are excellent at what you do, etc. Let them help you work through these kinds of politics. Leverage their position so your work gains traction with the larger organization.
- Avoid any confrontation with these dueling managers. This is not your fight! Sidestep any conflicts, and when necessary, simply say, "OK, I'll take that back to my manager."
- Depending on the circumstances, you could consider asking one of the other managers for career advice, or input on a project or a work product. This will naturally put them on your side, and perhaps be a bit flattering to them as well. Of course be transparent with your manager that you are doing this.
- Motor on in advancing the actual work of the group. There is no better defense than actually doing good work. Sometimes politics slows down progress, and you might just need to learn to adapt to that.
I can help coach you through these types of circumstances. I have 39 years experience in the pharma industry and have seen so many of these types of situations. Ring me up!
