In order to understand the function of the pectoral muscles, one must consider its origin and insertion.
The pectoralis major originates at the medial portion of the clavicle and inserts at the bicipital groove of the humerus. If you imagine a string running between these two structures that is being pulled in the direction of the origin (clavicle), you will find the arm is adducted (brought towards midline), internally rotated, and slightly flexed. Another approach if this visualization does not work for you, place your hand over the pectoralis major muscle and take your arm through various motions. You will feel that the muscle feels tightest when held in the positions mentioned above.
The pectoralis minor originates at the cartilage of ribs 3-5 and inserts at the coracoid process of the scapula. Again, imagine a string between these structures being pulled in the direction of the origin (ribs 3-5). You will find the scapula is drawn forward and downward.
Hope this helps!!
