Math and science made easy - learn from a retired engineer
(2x + 2)2 = 4 ←Take the square root of both sides to get:
2x + 2 = ±√4
2x + 2 = ±2 ←This is both +2 or -2 because (+2)2 = 4 and (-2)2 = 4
Case 1:
Consider the right side as "+2" to get
2x + 2 = 2 ←subtract 2 from both sides to get:
2x = 0 ←Divide both sides by 2 to get:
x = 0
Case 2:
Consider the right side as "-2" to get
2x + 2 = -2 ←subtract 2 from both sides to get:
2x = -4 ←Divide both sides by 2 to get:
x = -2
So there are two answers: x = 0 and x = -2
