An algebraic expression is a combination of alphabets(called as variables, whose values keep changing), Numbers(Called as Constants or coefficients if they are prefixed for variables, these values don't change) and operations ( The mathematical symbols +,-,*,/ which represent the relationship between the variables and constants).
Example 1: "There are 3 times the apples(A) than there are oranges(O) in a basket ".
The algebraic expression to show this would be : A=3.O. so If O= 4 then A = 3X 4 = 12.
Here, A & O are variables, 3 is coefficient of O,
(Also, Note that though not explicitly written the coefficient of A is 1)
Example 2 : "My age is Double of my son's age and 5 years more". The algebraic expression to show this would be: My Age is represented as X; my son's age is represented as Y
X = 3Y + 5. So if my son's age is 15, I am 35 Years old.
Here, X & Y are variables, 3 is coefficient of Y and Coefficient of X is 1 (though not written) and 5 is a constant. The operations in this expression are 'multiplication' (between 3 and Y though the sign/operator is not explicitly written) and addition between 3Y and 5 shown with the operator +.
