To add or subtract fractions, the fractions must have common denominators. We usually work with a least common denominator. Without going into detail on how to determine the least common denominator, for this problem the LCD is 27. To convert 8/9 to have a denominator of 27, multiply its numerator and denominator by 3.
8/9 becomes 24/27. Now perform this operation because 17/27 already has a denominator of 27.
24/27 - 17/27 = (24-17)/27 = 7/27.
