School of Technology students want to build a deck around a 15 -foot by 20 -foot pool. The deck has a width of x feet.

Which expression in the form ax^(2)+bx+c represents the area of the pool with the deck included? Show your work on the paper provided by your teacher.

Hi Sophiq,

Essentially, the deck adds "2x" feet to each side. So width with deck is (15 + 2x), and length with deck is (20 + 2x). It helps to draw a picture, but I am unable to do that here. Remember, for rectangles:

A = LW

L = 20 + 2x

W = 15 + 2x

A = (20 + 2x) (15 + 2x)

Foiling:

A = 4x² + 70x + 300
