To increase the starting value of 56 by 13% determine the amount of increase by finding what is 13& of 56. Add that amount of increase to 56 to get the new amount. 13% of 56 is found by .13(56) = 7.28.
The result: 56 + 7.28 = 63.28.
Once you get the hang of it here is an alternate method that is a bit easier:
56 + 0.13(56) = 56[1 + 0.13] = 56(1.13) = 63.28
In other words for percent increase add the growth rate to 1.00 and multiply that times the starting value.
For example: increate 223 by 10%:
1.10(223) gives the result.
For percent decrease the multiplier is 1.00 - decrease
18 decreased by 2%:
0.98(18)
