Question

A rental car company charges $24 per day to rent a car and $0.10 for every mile driven. Xin wants to rent a car, knowing that:

1. She plans to drive 200 miles.
2. She has at most $140 to spend.

Write and solve an inequality which can be used to determine dd, the number of days Xin can afford to rent while staying within her budget.

(I have the inequality I just need to solve for d which I am having trouble with)

Let d = the number of days rented.

Let m = the number of miles driven.

Verbal Model:

Cost for Days Rented + Cost for Miles Driven ≤ Total Cost

24d + .10m ≤ Total Cost Now plug in the values given

24d + .10(200) ≤ 140 Now we can solve

24d + 20 ≤ 140 Subtract 20 from both sides of the equation

24d + 20 - 20 ≤ 140 - 20

24d + ≤ 120 Divide both sides by 24

24d/24 + ≤ 120/24

d ≤ 5 days

We know that Xin plans to drive 200 miles. At .10 per mile this comes to (.10)(200) = 20 dollars

Call the number of days d.

24d + 20 <= 140

Subtract 20 from both sides of the equation.

24d + 20 - 20 <= 140 - 20

24d <= 120

Divide both sides of the equation by 24.

24d/24 <= 120/24

d <= 5

so Xin can rent the car for at most 5 days.
