To remember the correct order of operations, use PEMDAS. You can memorize this using the sentence “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.”
P is for Parentheses
E is for Exponents
M is for Multiplication
D is for Division
A is for Addition
S is for Subtraction
So we calculate anything within parentheses first. Exponents are calculated next. Multiplication and Division are then done left to right, in the order in which you come to them. Addition and Subtraction are then done left to right, in the order in which you come to them.
The equation we’re dealing with here is 50 + 6 X 11 - 4.
There are no parentheses in the equation and no exponents. So we begin by doing multiplication and division left to right in the order in which we come to them.
This gives 50 + 66 - 4.
Next we do addition and subtraction left to right, in the order in which we come to them.
This gives 116 - 4 = 112. So the correct answer is 112.
