A scale drawing of a rectangular painting is 12 inches long and 8 inches tall. The actual painting is 2 feet tall. What is the scale of the drawing?
Reading the question you are given both the height of the drawing of painting (8 inches) and the height of the painting (2 feet).
Right away we should notice there are two separate units and need to be converted. A foot is 12 inches so we end up 24 inches of real life painting height.
Now that we have similar units we can compare 8 inches of drawing to 24 inches of real life painting, 8:24.
You can now simplify to the answer 1:3.
Checking our work, 8*3=24.
