Solving for q.
Make each side of the equation as simple as possible by removing parenthesis and combining similar terms.
24q + 2 = -6q + 3 + 8q + 4
24q + 2 = 2q + 7
Now transpose (drag) terms so that constant terms are on one side and terms containing q are on the other side (of the equal sign).
24q - 2q = 7 - 2 (you can probably visualize this step mentally and go right to the next line)
22q = 5 (now divide both sides by the coefficient of q)
q = 5/22
Want to check?
2[12(5/22) + 1] =? -3[2(5/22) - 1] + 8(5/22) + 4
2[30/11 + 11/11] =? -3(5/11 - 11/11) + 20/11 + 44/11
2(41/11) =? 18/11 +20/11 + 44/11
82/11 = ? 82/11 (check!)
