The point (0,0) in the coordinate plane is called the origin. The first zero is the x-coordinate, the 2nd the y-coordinate. The x-coordinate tells you how far and in which direction to move (left or right) to get to that point. Positive x values have you move to the right of the origin, negative to the left. The y-coordinate controls the vertical movement (up or down).
If you move to the right from (0,0) eight units, the new point will be (0 + 8, 0) --the y-coordinate does not change since there has been no vertical (up/down) move. So the coordinates of the new point (8, 0).
