Let P represent Poppy's age (now), K = Kate's, and D = Dane's
P = K + 5 (Poppy is 5 years older than Kate)
K = 2D (Kate is twice Dane's age)
But we are told that Poppy is 11 years old, so substitute 11 for P in the first equation:
11 = K + 5
K = 6 (subtract 5 from both sides of the equation)
Now we know that Kate is 6 so substitute that value for K in the 2nd equation:
6 = 2D
D = 3 (divide both sides by 2)
P=11
K = 6
D = 3
Poppy is 5 years older than Kate and Kate is twice Dane's age (check)!
