Sarah and Alex are comparing how much they each spend on groceries. Sarah spends three times the difference between the number of days in the month and four dollars on groceries each week. Alex spends a fixed amount each week: $18 plus twice the number of days in the month, but one week he had to subtract $11 due to a refund.
If Sarah's weekly spending is the same as Alex's after the refund, how many days are in the month?

Situation:
Bob's age is 11 years less than twice Alice's age.
In 18 years, Bob's age will be 3 times what Alice's age was 4 years ago.
How old is Alice now?
Let x = Alice's age and y = Bob's age.
The first sentence in the situation tells us y = 2x - 11
The second sentence tells us: 18 + y = 3 (x-4)
Combining these two equations by substituting for y in the 2nd equation gives:
18 + 2x - 11 = 3(x-4)
Frank T.'s answer shows how to solve this for Alice's age (x).
3(x-4)=18+2x-11
3x - 12 = 18 + 2x - 11
x -12 = 18-11
x - 12 = 7
x - 19 = 0
