Does the appendix have a function in the human body?

A common myth in anatomy is that the appendix has no function, but it is actually an active organ of the immune system. Although not required for survival (our bodies have many "back-up" organs in the immune system, for example we can maintain homeostasis by losing some lymph nodes).

The appendix contains a high concentration of lymphoid tissue, which suggests it may contribute to immune responses, particularly in young people. It may help stimulate the production of antibodies and support the development of gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT), important in the body’s defense against pathogens.

One of the most widely accepted theories is that the appendix serves as a "safe house" for beneficial bacteria. In cases of gastrointestinal infections that flush out gut flora (such as diarrhea), the appendix may help replenish the intestines with healthy bacteria, aiding in the recovery of the digestive system.
