Very good question! Originally the appendix was thought to be an unnecessary accessory organ, however, we now know that it has important functions enhancing the immune and providing additional gut flora for the body. It also produces hormones to help the body for its functioning. Occasionally, the appendix can become infected, and therefore treatment and even surgery is necessary.

Yes, the appendix does have a function, although it is not necessary for our survival as humans. It is effectively a surveillance system for the immune system, as lymphoid germinal centers predominate in the innermost layer of the appendix. As the appendix is an offshoot of the colon immediately after the ileocecal valve, fecal matter circulates within the appendix, allowing the immune system to encounter and react against any pathogen that may be reproducing within the large intestine.

If fecal matter becomes trapped in the appendix, this can actually allow bacteria to reproduce and lead to inflammation of the appendix. Rupture of the appendix secondary to infection and edema can lead to life-threatening infection within the peritoneum, and surgical removal should immediately be pursued.
