If I use five scoops of powdered Gatorade in 1 gallon of water, how much water would I use if I only have three scoops of Gatorade powder?

5 scoops is to 1 gallon as 3 scoops it so x gallons.

this can be expressed as a proportion (ratios are equal).

5/1 = 3/x

Sometimes when we solve a proportion we use the phrase "cross multiply" or the "product of the means equals the product of the extremes".

That results in:

5x =3(1)

5x = 3

x = 3/5 gallons
