Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
(x+1)^2 -9
= x^2+2x +1-9
= x^2+2x-8
= (x+4)(x-2)
or use the difference of squares formula a^2 -b^2 = (a-b)(a+b) with a=x+1, b=3
(x+1)^2 -9
= (x+1-3)(x+1+3)
=(x-2)(x+4)

Tutoring gives me hippieness because my goal is to help students
first simplify (x+1)^2 as
(x+1)(x+1)
=x*x +x*1+1*x+1*1
=x^2 +2x +1
then subtract( 9)
x^2 +2x +1-9
=x^2 +2x -8
=(x-2)(x+4)
Here you go! I hope this helps :)
