Jim Has 13 quarters and 15 nickels equaling $4. Jim was given an additional $3.00 that was made up of equal numbers of nickels and quarters. How many of each coin was he given? Justify your answer.

Let x = the number of quarters and nickels. If the total is $3.00 then the equation must be:

0.25x+0.05x = 3.00 To solve combine like terms.

0.30x = 3.00 Divide both sides by 0.30

x=10 nickels and quarters

Additional amount given to George was $3;00 with equal number (=x) of Nickels and quartes. Then

5x + 25x = 300

30x = 300, then x = 300/30 = 10.

Additional amount has 10 nickels and 10 quarters.

George has now 23 Quarters and 25 Nickels equaling $7:00.
