the messaging option is not available in the tutor's window

Not sure - but the tutor may have closed their account. Try to schedule a lesson with them and see if the system lets you make the request. If they don't, it's time to find another tutor.
On an unrelated note, I tutor in non-destructive editing suite like this application called Adobe Photoshop if you need my services lol.
