If you multiply .4(425) you will have the amount of the 40% discount.
If you subtract that amount from the original price you will have the sale price:
425 - .4(425)
You can do that calculation to get the sales price, but take note of the following.
Each term above contains the factor 425. Try picturing factoring out the 425:
425[1 - 0.4]
425(0.6)
Another way to think about it: if you take 40% off there will be 60% left.
