We can create an equation to help us solve this problem.
Washer + Dryer = 1010
Since the washer cost $60 more than the dryer, we can create another equation.
Washer = 60 + Dryer
Now, let’s use variables instead of the words.
W + D = 1010
W = 60 + D
Let’s create one equation using only one variable. We are using a method called substitution. Do you notice that we can replace W with 60 + D?
W + D = 1010
W = 60 + D
60 + D + D = 1010
Now, this is an equation that we can solve because there is only 1 type of variable. Let’s combine our like-terms.
60 + 2D = 1010
Subtract 60 on both sides.
2D = 950
Divide both sides by 2.
D = 475 So, the dryer costs $475.
Now, go back and make sure we answered the question. Since they wanted the cost of the dryer only, we did! 🙂
