Question

A bulletin board is 60 in wide and 36 in tall. A paper boarder is 3 in wide. How wide and how tall is the space inside the boarder?

Since the 3 inch wide strip will border the bulletin board, you will need to subtract 6 inches from each measurement (3+3= 6)

36-3=33 inches high

60-6=54 inches wide

33 x 54 are the dimensions of the space inside the bulletin board with the 3 inch border

If the border is 3 inches wide on all sides, it means that we are going to subtract 3 inches on both sides of each width and length. (think of a square within a square.) So we are subtracting 6 inches from the height and 6 inches from the length to find the dimensions of the smaller internal square. (I think a common mistake made would be only to subtract 3 from each dimension).
