Here is a format for teaching and adapting to the needs of an individual with ASD, ADD or other disabilities including test anxiety.
An example of essay writing for an individual with attentional issues (ADHD, ASD, LD)
Task - Essay writing
- Break down the task by using the prompts for the essay
- Discuss each part of the prompt to guage the indovidual's understanding of the requirements
- Generate the outline for the essay
- Facilitate and encourage the use of definitions to come up with concept maps and flow diagrams (needed based on the complexity of the content required)
- Prompt/Assist in creating an outline that includes the main points and supporting details for each paragraph.
Writing intoduction - Teach the student how to write a hook to grab the reader's attention based on what they want to say. The stident will highlight the importance of the topic and why it needs to be shared. This will be hekpful in guiding the student in writing a clear thesis statement that addresses the main idea of the essay.
Developing Body Paragraphs: This will consist of several paragraphs with each one discussing a particular aspect of the essay topic. The first sentence in each paragraph will be the topic sentence, follwed by supporting details, and examples.
Transitions between paragraph - Many good writers have difficullties with this one! Teaching why the flow of ideas between these various paragraphs must retain continuty evn when a different aspect of the essay topic is being discussed.
Conclusion would be take the main ideas from each paragraph and providing comprehensive synthesis that would lead to an expert viewpoint(s) about the topic. This would involve guiding the student in writing a strong concluding statement that leaves a lasting impression on the reader.
Providing refrences in a required format is a very important step for assuring authenticity of the content to the readers.
Editing and rviewing : Helpe student in formatting the essay according to guidelines (e.g., MLA or APA style). Review the essay with the student to ensure it meets the requirements of the prompt and is well-organized.
By breaking down the essay into smaller, more manageable steps, I think can help the student with ASD feel less overwhelmed and more confident in their writing abilities.
The above process can be tailored to othe assignments as well including in the preparation for completing assigned reading and application for a multiple choice quiz or an exam.
