A prepositional phrase is like a tiny travel guide in your sentence, leading you to important information about location, time, direction, or details. It starts with a preposition (words like "in," "on," "at," "under") and ends with the object of the preposition (usually a noun or pronoun). For example, in the phrase "under the bed," "under" is the preposition, and "the bed" is the object. Together, they help you figure out where your missing sock might be hiding!

Most essentially, prepositions tell us about the positions of things. (The meaning is right under our nose, but it is rarely ever explained this way!)
"Phrases" in the context of grammar (or more specifically, in the context of "syntax" or the arrangement of words) is the name for a group of 2 or more words that serve the same function.
So if prepositions tell us positions, and phrases are 2 or more words serving the same function, then prepositional phrases are 2 or more words that tell us positions.
Here are several examples.
- The sun rises in the east.
- I want to go to the party.
- If there are nuts in the pastry, then I cannot eat it.
- How do you type on this keyboard?
A prepositional phrase is a group of words that starts with words like 'behind,' 'in,' or 'on' and gives us extra details about a place or time in a sentence. For example, in the sentence 'The cat is under the table,' 'under the table' is a prepositional phrase because it tells us where the cat is hiding.
