Think of negative numbers instead as something you don't have or something you owe. Let's say you eat your friend's cookie, and he tells you have -1 cookies for eating his cookie. This means you owe him one cookie. If you eat another one of your friend's cookies, you have -2 cookies, so you owe him to 2 cookies now. You are adding -1 to another -1 or in other word -1 + (-1) = -2.

I believe your misconception of negative numbers cancelling out comes from the multipliable property of negative numbers, where -1 times -1 equals +1.

If you’re adding two negative values together you will always end up with a value that is even more negative. You move further away from 0 in the negative direction when a negative is added to a negative.

I like to think of this question in terms of debt. Imagine that you owe $5 to someone. You are -5 in debt to them. Now imagine that you borrow $10 more dollars. You have added 10 to your debt. Now you are -15 in debt. So, when you add a negative number to a negative number, you add the numbers and keep the negative sign.

-1 + (-1)

First signal: The number on the left (-1) tells you where to start.

Second Signal: do the signs in middle match or not? In -1 +(-1), the signs don't match, so you are going to travel in the negative (left) direction.

Third signal- The second number tells you how far you are traveling- 1 space.

So, start at -1, go left one space, you end up at negative 2.
