Crude oil is leaking from a tank at the rate of 10% of the tank volume every 3 hrs. If the tanker originally contained 600,000 gallons of oil, how many gallons of oil remain in the tank after 4 hrs? Round to the nearest gallon.
Given Info:
Lose oil 10% of the volume every 3 hours (0.1)gallon/3 hours
Original amount : 600,000 gallons
Find:
The number of gallons left in the tank after 4 hours of leaking.
1) Find the number of gallons that are leaked during the 4 hours
4hours x (0.1 gallon)/3 hours x 600,000 gallons = 80,000 gallons leaked
2) How much is left: 600,000-80,000 = 520,000 gallons of oil
