As a good rule of thumb if you are having trouble its good to make sure you understand what the variables would mean:
d is price of gas per gallon
p is the total amount of money you spend
Given that you bought 8 Gallons of gas and payed a total of $23.20 your equation would look like this:
8d = 23.20
You then divide 23.20 (Total Price) by 8 (Gallons of Gas you bought) to get the price you paid for each gallon.
d = 23.20 / 8
The answer comes out to be d = 2.9
Remember that d is the cost of gas per gallon so the correct way to write the answer would be $2.90
