I'm confused on this.

The value of Royce Company's computer equipment is decreasing in value according to the following function. y= 4000(0.87)* In the equation, x is the number of years that have elapsed since the equipment was purchased and y is the value in dollars. What was the value 5 years after it was purchased? Round your answer to the nearest dollar.

Jacob H in your function you have an asterisk where I think you mean to have an x. If so then your function is y = 4000(0.87)^x and all you need to do is plug in 5 for x since x represents the number of years and do the calculation just as Mark M has it below.
