the steeper slope has a larger absolute value

y=12x has a slope of 12

y=-13x has a slope of -13

the sign tells you if it's up or downward sloping. + slope means upward sloping, - slope means downward sloping

but 13>12, so the line with slope=-13 has greater slope than the line with slope=12

if you solve the equation for y, then the coefficient of the x term = the line's slope
