Think about the digits after the decimal place. 81.2 is to the nearest tenth. 4.01 is to the nearest hundredth. To understand that nearest hundredth is more precise than nearest tenth, think about a 100-meter race. 10 seconds is a very imprecise (albeit elite) time, and cannot sufficiently distinguish between elite athlete finishes, whereas 9.98 seconds vs. 9.99 seconds can. The smaller the decimal, the greater the precision.
