Volume and surface area

a. The length of each edge of a cube is 5 cm. Calculate its surface area and its volume

b. If the length of each edge triples to 15 cm, by what factors do its surface area and its volume increase?

Answer 1

volume = 5^3 = 125 cm^3

surface area = 6 x 5^2 = 150 cm^2

if the side triples to 15

then volume = 15^3 = 225(15) = 3375 cm^3 which is a factor of 27 greater (3^3)

surface area = 6 x 15^2 = 6(225) = 1350 cm^2 which is a factor of 3^2 = 9 greater.
