x + 3y = 20
First, multiply the first equation by 3, then add the equations together.
3(-10x - y = 3) → -30x - 3y = 9
Becomes:
-30x - 3y = 9
x + 3y = 20
Add to eliminate y:
-29x =29
Then, solve for x:
-29x/-29 = 29/-29
x = -1
Now, plug this x value back in to solve for y! You can use either of the original equations:
x + 3y = 20
-1 + 3y = 20
3y = 21
y = 7
