The difference between -1 and -7 is 6. The problem does not require absolute value.

Yes, the difference between -1 and -7 is 6. In this problem, the difference between -1 and 7 is 8. Also, the difference between 15 and 7 is 8. So -1 and 15 are my two candidates for the required number that is 8 units away from 7. To get two candidates, I used absolute value. Absolute value, together with subtraction, is the natural translation of "distance" or "difference". How would we get the two answers -1 and 15 without absolute value? Thanks and good evening.
