When the trucks meet, they will have travelled the same amount of time, t. The time for each truck is given by t = distance travelled / speed. The distance truck 1 travels is D1 = 339 - D2, where D2 is the distance traveled by truck 2. The time travelled by truck 1 can be written as
t1 = D1/V1 and t2 = D2/V2 where V1 and V2 are the velocities of the two trucks. Setting t1 = t2 gives D1/V1 = D2/V2 or D1/55 mph = (339 - D1)/58 mph. This leaves only one unknown in the bolded equation. Simplifying and solving for D1 gives D1 = 165.0 miles. The time for truck 1 to travel that distance is 165.1 / 55 = 3.0 hours. The time for truck 2 = (339 - 165.1)/ 58 = 3.0 hours. The are equal as required by the first sentence.
