Jen Butler has been pricing Speed-Pass train fares for a group trip to New York. Three adults and four children must pay
$86.
Two adults and three children must pay
$61.
Find the price of the adult's ticket and the price of a child's ticket.

Let a be the price of an adult ticket.
Let c be the price of a child's ticket.
3a + 4c = 86
2a + 3c = 61
Multiply the first equation by 2, and the second edition by 3:
6a + 8c = 172
6a + 9c = 183
Subtract the first equation from the second:
c = 11
Substitute this value back into the first equation:
3a + 4(11) = 86
3a + 44 = 86
Subtract 44 from both sides:
3a = 42
Divide both sides by 3:
a = 14
Check to make sure the second equation holds for these values:
2(14) + 3(11) = 28 + 33 = 61
So the correct answer is a = $14 and c = $11.
