I love tutoring Math.
The "Y intercept" is the point of the chart that is on the Y axis, in other words, the point whose X-coördinate is 0. They tell you that the point (0, 3) is on the chart. That's the point we want, so the Y intercept is 3.
Now as for the slope, note that every time we add 1 to X, the Y increases by 4. For example, the second point (-1, -1) has an X that is 1 bigger than that of the first point (-2, -5), and a Y that is 4 bigger than that of the first point. (-1 is 4 bigger than -5.)
Then the third point (0, 3) has an X that is 1 bigger than that of the first point (-1, -1), and a Y that is 4 bigger than that of the second point. (3 is 4 bigger than -1.)
Etc. Please verify that this pattern continues.
Since we're picking up 4 units of Y for every unit of X that we gain, the "rise over run", in other words, the slope, is 4/1 = 4. Thank you.
