Math, microeconomics or criminal justice
look at the primes
8 = 2^3
12 = 2^2 times 3
1st smallest common multiple is 24, then 48, then 72
12x2, 12x4, 12x6
8x3, 8x6, 8x9
4x6, 4x12, 4x18
24, 48, 72
multiples of 8: 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72
multiples of 12: 24, 36, 48, 60, 72
only ones in common are 24, 48, 72, for the 1st three common multiples
you can pretty much ignore 4, as any multiple of 8 is also a multiple of 4
and any multiple of 12 is also a multiple of 4
4 is the spare tire on the problem
