Substitute the value of 3y from the second equation into the first equation.
5x + (15x - 21) = 23. Collect like terms
20x - 21 = 23 Add 21 to both sides
20x = 44
x = 44/20. or 11/5. divide and reduce.
Put that value into either equation for x to find y. I chose the second equation
3y = 15 x - 21
3y = 15 ( 11/5) - 21
3y = 33 - 21
3y = 12
y = 4 (11/5, 4) is the solution.
Check in first equation.
5x+3y=23
5( 11/5) + 3( 4) = 23??
11 + 12 = 23
23 = 23. Yes.
