Suppose the question was "how may 2 lb. hamburgers can be made from 8 lbs. of ground beef?".
You want to determine how many "2s" are contained in 8. The operation that answers that question is division.
8 divided by 2 tells you how many "2s" there are in 8,
Back to the original question the pattern is the same. How many "1/4 ths" are contained in 5 1/2?
Rewrite 5 1/2 as 11/2, then divide by 1/4.
(11/2) / (1/4) = (11/2) (4/1) = (11)(2) = 22.
With 5 1/2 lbs. of ground beef 22 quarter pounders can be made.
